What is a chiller system?
Unlike smaller vessels that use direct expansion (DX) air conditioning — where refrigerant circulates directly to each unit — larger yachts typically use a centralised chiller system. A chiller works by cooling a supply of water, which is then pumped around the vessel to fan coil units in each cabin or space. This approach offers more precise temperature control, quieter operation, and greater flexibility across a large number of zones.
The main components of a marine chiller system are the chiller unit itself (usually located in the engine room), a pump set to circulate the chilled water, a network of insulated pipework, and fan coil units in each area being cooled. On larger vessels, multiple chillers may run in parallel for redundancy and load balancing.

Key Benefits of a Chiller Refit
Upgrading your chiller system isn’t just about replacing old equipment—it’s about improving performance, comfort, and reliability across your vessel.
Energy Efficiency
Modern inverter-driven compressors adjust output based on demand, helping you significantly reduce power consumption and operating costs.
Quiet Operation
Newer systems run much more smoothly, with less noise and vibration—ideal for maintaining a peaceful, luxury onboard experience.
Improved Reliability
Replacing ageing components helps prevent unexpected breakdowns, especially during peak summer usage when systems are under the most strain.
Regulatory Compliance
Stay ahead of environmental regulations with updated systems that meet the latest refrigerant and efficiency standards.
Key Upgrades in a Modern Refit
A modern refit introduces advanced technologies that improve both performance and efficiency.
Inverter (VFD) Technology
Variable-speed compressors automatically match cooling output to real-time demand. This can reduce energy use by 15–50% while eliminating high startup power surges.
Environmentally Friendly Refrigerants
New systems use low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants such as R410A or CO₂, helping you meet evolving EU environmental standards.
Smart Controls
Advanced PLC-based monitoring systems give your crew real-time insights into performance, allowing for predictive maintenance and reducing the risk of failures mid-voyage.
Magnetic Bearing Compressors
High-end upgrades may include oil-free Turbocor compressors. These are more compact, reduce friction, and operate with significantly less noise.
Custom-Built Water Manifolds
We specialise in designing and manufacturing custom-built water manifolds tailored to your vessel.
Georg Fischer (GF) Manifold Benefits

Corrosion Resistance
GF plastic systems are completely resistant to saltwater corrosion and scaling—unlike traditional steel or cupro-nickel—ensuring long-term reliability and consistent flow.

Weight Reduction
These systems are up to five times lighter than metal alternatives, helping improve overall vessel performance and fuel efficiency.

Space Optimisation
Using 3D scanning and CAD design, each manifold is precision-built to fit your engine room perfectly. Modular designs also allow for easier installation through standard hatches.
